Neighbors working together for a stronger West Side.

South West Area Neighbors (SWAN) is a neighborhood organization in Grand Rapids, Michigan. We connect residents through community projects, neighborhood conversations, shared resources, and local events. Our work centers on resident leadership, neighborhood safety, and community improvement.

OUR ROOTS
SWAN has served West Side neighbors since 1992. Our story is part of a longer tradition of residents organizing to care for their neighborhoods. Grand Rapids Public Library’s neighborhood archives document SWAN and its early organizer, Shirley Sieting.

Resident involvement has also shaped neighborhood planning. Michigan State University’s Building Great Neighborhoods manual features SWAN’s 2001–2003 planning process as a case study. The City of Grand Rapids adopted the John Ball Area Neighbors / South West Area Neighbors Area Specific Plan on October 23, 2012.

WHAT WE DO
Community connections. Neighborhood meetings and events bring people together to share ideas, learn about local issues, and get to know one another.

Shared spaces. Our community garden at 700 Butterworth gives neighbors a place to grow together. Email info@swangr.org to ask about adopting a garden plot.

Practical resources. The SWAN Tool Library helps neighbors borrow tools for personal home projects. Pickup is by appointment at Lincoln Park Pavilion; visit the Tool Library page for borrowing rules and requests.

Neighborhood celebrations. Programs such as Westside Wednesdays, StorytimeGR at Lincoln Park, and the Westside Trunk-or-Treat create opportunities to connect across the West Side. Visit Events for current listings and details.

PEOPLE MAKE THE DIFFERENCE
SWAN’s volunteer board and executive director work with neighbors and community partners. Whether you have an idea, want to help with a project, or need a connection to local resources, we welcome hearing from you. Meet our board and staff through “Meet the Team” in the menu.
