Neighborhood Crime Log
Over the past few weeks we noticed an increase in vandalism reports throughout our neighborhood. Someone seemed to be breaking either car windows or spray painted graffiti. These incidents occurred during the “wee hours of the night” and there were no witnesses or reports called in on suspicious persons. Remember if someone graffiti’s your property it is a crime.
These incidents were scattered throughout the neighborhood and were not focused in any one section of our neighborhood. They appeared to be committed randomly throughout the neighborhood.
We can have the police patrol the neighborhood as deterrence to specific crime but the way to impact these types of crimes is to increase block clubs and educate residents in crime reporting. Most of the blocks affected have no organized block club and many residents don’t know each other. We all want to have a safe neighborhood but we must work together to achieve that goal. Porch lights kept on all night light up a block and make the street look less vulnerable. A suspect wanting to cause trouble might be more apt to choose a dark street compared to a well-lighted one.
If you have been victimized by graffiti please give us a call. We can provide a graffiti abatement release form which the city needs in order to clean up your graffiti. It’s also a crime. Please report those incidents by calling the non-emergency police number (456-3400) and filing a complaint. Keep in mind that if it’s not reported then it didn’t happen and we can’t ask for extra patrols unless we have those reports filed.
911 should be called during crimes in progress. If you observe something that just doesn’t seem right to you then call the non-emergency police number at 456-3400 to report the suspicious activity. People out walking around in the wee hours of the night should be considered suspicious. To find out more on how to organize a block club or have questions about crime issues call SWAN at 456-9190. Remember; keep those porch lights on all night!
